List of Things that I am Self-Hosting

Self Hosting

This is a list of probably everything (that I remember) that I am self-hosting, self-hosting as in at home, on my homelab/NAS or whatever. I’ll maybe write a review to some of them or just list them idk.

Jellyfin is a fork of Emby when it became proprietary software. The other alternative I know is PLEX but it sucks, not because it’s proprietary even though it has that spyware glow to it, hell I think they even blocked hosting on Hetzner recently, but mainly because you have to pay for transcoding because you JUST NEED TO OK? The only redeemable factor from PLEX is that they offer all kinds of applications, like for your TV, but they all suck (the apps and the TVs just hook a computer to your TV it’s better) and I think they also can proxy your media from their servers if you are stupid and can’t set up a reverse proxy, I’d use PLEX if they didn’t have you make an account, an online account instead of just a local account. Jellyfin’s “ecosystem” is bearable to be honest, the applications work but are a bit sluggish, for a FOSS application it’s ok, you don’t need that much freetard copium to defend it. I don’t watch a lot of stuff but Jellyfin comes in handy for music.

I use qbittorrent-nox (the headless version with a web UI) to perma seed my torrents with a VPN curtesy of my Romanian friend so I don’t have to pull up the sheckels for Mullvad VPN or IVPN.

I have some IoT devices at home, like a printer a Shelly Plug S and my ISP backdoored as fuck Sagem shitbox. I use it solely for statistics, like my shitbox public IP, upload and download speeds as well as qBittorrent up/dl speeds, wattage from my Shelly Plug S and some printer stuff. Not much else because I haven’t fallen for the home automation meme yet. It’s kinda annoying to host without Docker because they love shilling that garbage. Only complaints is that they are dropping the version of Python I have on Debian, but that’s a Debian thing. Oh also the graphs could be better. When you hover your mouse on the graphs it slows your browser to a crawl.

duplicacy.jpg

I use the web version of Duplicacy it seems to be the best out there, but I will probably start learning how to use the free CLI only version of this program to backup incrementally and locally instead of backing up to the cloud (Backblaze B2).

slskd.png

This is probably one of the more esoteric programs out there, it’s the only headless slsk client that I know of. It’s not great in my opinion and It has a lot to improve but I like permaseeding and this is my only option. Use the official proprietary client of Nicotine+ if you’re less autistic.

netdata.png

Netdata is a system monitoring web application that just works, you can install it on Debian easily with the official, but a bit outdated package, but I have some small nitpicks: 1. Manually adding their repository doesn’t really work, they provide some sort of bash script to install the latest version, something like curl -s someurl | bash which I hate running for obvious reason, so I am stuck with the older versions on my machine which is fine. The other nitpick is that for some reason, at the least in this version that I am using 1.37.1, they embed the favicon in base64 directly into the HTML meaning that Firefox can’t save it in the bookmarks, I wrote a fix for it, but it annoyed me, lastly Netdata doesn’t have any sort of authentication so you’re supposed to use HTTP basic auth, which is fine. Other than that, the application is amazing and track things that you didn’t even know were possible without using that much memory or CPU.

syncthing.png

I have been using Syncthing to sync my files locally at home for probably 2 years now and the only real complaint that I have for now is the fact that it seems like this software fucking hates syncthing shit like Git repositories that move a lot. If you try syncing shit like git repositories what will happen is that you will end up with a shit ton of “sync conflicts” and it scares the shit out of me because I don’t really know what to do in that situation. Otherwise it works.
